What is U.S. Figure Skating?

U.S. Figure Skating, formerly known as the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA), is the national governing body for figure skating on ice in the United States and it's comprised of Member Clubs, Individual Members, and Associate Members.  The Charter Member Clubs numbered seven in 1921 when the Association was formed and became a member of the International Skating Union (ISU), the international governing body for skating sports.  Today, approximately 450 Member Clubs cover the country from coast to coast, and over 120,000 skaters are registered by U.S. Figure Skating.

The U.S. Figure Skating Freestyle, Dance, and Pair test structures set the standard of proficiency for the sport and are a measurement of a skater's progress.  Competitions sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating are a principal incentive for figure skaters to train, develop, and improve their proficiency.  By ascending the "competition ladder" of regional, sectional, and national championships, U.S. Figure Skating competitors gain entry into international figure skating events--among them the Winter Olympic Games and the World Figure Skating Championships.

However, competitive skating is not a requirement and skaters may participate in the U.S. Figure Skating test structure simply for the personal satisfaction of reaching the levels of proficiency in the sport that are recognized around the world.

U.S. Figure Skating is also responsible for the formation of the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills "Skate With US" Program.  The Basic Skills Program is a beginning ice skating program that is fun, challenging, and rewarding.  Participation in the program will enable beginning skaters of all ages to learn the fundamentals of the sport and begin a lifetime commitment to health and fitness.  So, whether you goal is to aim for the Olympics, improve your overall health and fitness, enjoy the social aspects of skating, or just to have fun, you are sure to realize those goals by joining U.S. Figure Skating through one of the many Member Clubs across the country.
